USING YOUR COLDROOM

Simple habits.
Better cold storage.

A few everyday tips to help your fridge or freezer work well—keep the door closed, give the air space to move and let the room get down to temperature.

THE THREE ESSENTIALS

Shut the door properly.
Leave airflow clear.
Let it reach temperature.

Share these tips with everyone using the room.
01

KEEP THE DOOR CLOSED

A quick check makes a big difference.

Keep the door closed as much as possible. Once you’ve finished loading or collecting stock, close it fully and check it has shut properly. Don’t assume it has caught just because it looks closed.

  • Avoid propping the door open during service or leaving it open between trips.
  • Warm, moist air entering the room can raise the temperature, cause condensation and contribute to ice build-up. The refrigeration has to work harder to cool the room again.
  • Keep packaging and products clear of the doorway, seals and any strip curtains.
02

LET IT GET COLD FIRST

Give your room time to reach temperature.

Before you start loading, let the room get down to the required temperature with the door closed. Adding stock too early or repeatedly opening the door can slow this down.

  • Load products at the appropriate chilled or frozen temperature.
  • Don’t put hot food straight into the room. This adds heat and can affect the temperature of other products.
  • After loading, close the door properly and let the room settle while continuing your normal temperature checks.
03

LEAVE SPACE AROUND PRODUCTS

Good airflow helps keep the room cold.

Leave gaps around stored products so cold air can circulate. Avoid tightly packing the room or stacking stock right up against the refrigeration unit.

  • Leave a clear gap in front of the internal motor’s fan and air outlets.
  • Don’t block the air path with boxes, bags or tall stacks of stock.
  • Keep the doorway and walking route clear so people can get in and out quickly.
04

KEEP EXTERNAL FANS CLEAR

Your motor needs space outside too.

Keep the external fans and ventilation areas clear. Don’t place boxes, bins, pallets or other equipment in front of them or against the motor.

  • Leave the space around the refrigeration equipment open for airflow.
  • Check that rubbish or packaging hasn’t collected around the fans.
  • Don’t cover the motor or lean anything against it.
05

LEAVE THE CONTROLS ALONE

Need a different temperature? Speak to VCS.

Please don’t adjust motor controls or temperature settings yourself. If you need a temperature change, speak with VCS so we can confirm the right setting for your room and products.

  • A warmer display reading after door use doesn’t mean the setting needs changing.
  • Avoid pressing other control buttons while trying to turn the light on.
  • Only use the light control described below when you need the room light.
06

TURNING THE LIGHT BACK ON

Light off? Try the light button.

If the room light goes off, use the button for your motor type:

  • Sicaf motor: press the light-bulb symbol to turn the light on.
  • Zanotti motor: press the down arrow to turn the light back on.
  • This turns on the light; it isn’t a reason to change the temperature controls.

GOOD TO KNOW

Why these little habits matter.

Why does leaving the door open cause problems?

Every time the door is open, warmer air can enter and cold air can escape. Moisture can lead to condensation and ice, particularly in a freezer. Long or frequent openings make it harder for the room to maintain temperature. Plan what you need before opening the door, make your trip as quick as practical and check it is fully shut afterwards.

The display is warmer after loading or using the door.

The display shows the temperature at a sensor, which can change during door use and loading. Close the door properly, keep the air outlets clear and continue your normal temperature checks. Don’t adjust the controls to chase a changing reading. If temperatures exceed your food-safety limits, follow your site’s procedures to protect the products; don’t assume the stock is safe just because the room later cools down.

How much space should I leave in front of the motor?

Keep a clear gap in front of the internal fan and air outlets, and avoid stacking products into that space. Outside, keep the fans and ventilation areas unobstructed. The exact space depends on your unit and installation; if you’re unsure, VCS can clarify.
